Update from Mrs. O’Neil’s class!

Here are some highlights of what to expect for the remainder of the year until March Break.Language Arts

ReadingStudents will continue to strengthen their reading skills by reading material at their own level. Students should be reading at home and using their monthly reading log to practice reading strategies. It is important that children not only read and decode the written words, but that they can comprehend what they read.

In class, we are continuing our Better Answers strategy when answering “open response” questions. A hamburger icon is used to prompt the students to remember to have 3 parts to their answer:

-the top bun restates the question,

-the burger adds the details from the text to answer the question

-the toppings are the student’s connection to the text

-and finally, the closing of the answer refers again to the question.

Throughout the school, students are using this strategy to answer questions in all subject areas. Hopefully, you will find that your child is answering your questions at home better too!

WritingStudents will be writing reports to inform about a topic. They will use the computer and books to do some research activities.

Word study (spelling connections) will continue as a part of their homework. Students are given 2-3 nights to complete the short activities.

MathematicsWe are working on 2 and 3-digit addition and subtraction. Various strategies have been reviewed to practice mental math strategies (facts). Students are encouraged to practice facts up to 20.We will continue adding and subtracting with larger numbers over the next 2 months. Problem solving is also important to apply these skills. Children will be expected to read and solve multi-step problems.

Please continue to review daily math with your child. It is very important that students complete and return nightly homework. If students have difficulty or are unable to complete the assigned work they will be expected to complete it with me during recess time.

Science Our current unit is Forces and Movement. We will look at various forces that impact their lives as Pushes and Pulls.DanceMrs. Morris has prepared a creative unit for our students again this year. Her integration of drama and dance always has the students very excited!

Their final presentation will be on the morning of Thursday, January 27 at 10:30.

Term 1 Report cards will go home February 15, 2011.I will continue sending home some of work that has led to their final marks. Please review it with your child and return it to school.
