Sickness or Injury

Parents are asked to make sure that their child’s office records are up to date with the name and telephone number of a person(s) to call in case of sickness or injury when parents themselves cannot be reached (preferably someone in the Tilbury Area). If there is any change in this information provided, please inform us as soon as possible.

In the event a child becomes ill at school, we will first contact the parent at home or work. If the parent cannot be reached, we will contact the emergency number provided by the parent. No student will be sent home ill, unless it has been confirmed that a responsible adult is there to receive the student.

Although we try to control all potentially hazardous games or equipment on the school property, accidents do occur. In most cases, minor first aid is all that is required. Minor first aid will be provided and parents contacted if appropriate. When serious injuries occur, the parent or designated person is contacted and informed of the need of emergency medical attention. If we are unable to make parental contact, we will call for ambulance service and send the child to the hospital.

Student Insurance

The law in Ontario does not permit school boards to insure students for accidents or injury. Instead, the school sends home a package in September with information on how to purchase student insurance by mail from a major insurance company. This economical insurance is worth a look and forms are available at the school office.

Allergies

Our school is NUT AWARE. No items containing peanuts or peanut oils are allowed. Please ask for the Peanut Allergy Information Pamphlet from the office, or check for it on the side bar of our web-site (* Being Nut Aware*). Treats sent to school without nut-free packaging will be returned home. We have life-threatening peanut allergy students at our school and need to work together to protect them.

Medication

We are prepared to assist by keeping the medication at school, and seeing that it is provided to students at the appropriate time by an E.A. Each year, or with a change in prescription, a permission form signed by a parent or guardian and the doctor who has prescribed the medication, must be provided. Forms are available from the school office.

Staff is trained yearly in the use of an epi-pen. For reasons of safety and security, we ask that parents deliver medication, in the original container, to school rather than sending it with students. With parent consultation, students will be permitted to carry Epi-pens and puffers with them.

Pediculosis (Head Lice)

Control of pediculosis (head lice) is an ongoing process which requires vigilance at school and support from parents. At the beginning of each term the school attempts to conduct a school-wide check. Additional checks may be conducted if circumstances warrant.

Positive cases of pediculosis require immediate treatment so parents will be contacted to take students from school for treatment and to remove all nits (eggs).

Students may return to class after a head check by school staff. Before return to school is permitted the student must be free of all nits (eggs). A detailed procedure on control of pediculosis and resources for treatment is available upon request.
