Support Services
The first response to academic and behavioural difficulties is provided by the classroom teacher. These adjustments and accommodations are often sufficient to deal with the difficulty. In cases where difficulties persist, a variety of support programs and staff are available on referral.
In all cases where a referral to one of these programs is being considered, parents are contacted to advise them of the need for the referral and, where required, to secure written parental consent to proceed.
The following is a brief description of the support services available to our students.
Learning Resource Program
This program provides individual or small group assistance to students experiencing academic difficulty. For 2007-2008, our school has been assigned 1.5 staff members to provide this program.
Speech and Language Therapy
This program is provided for students with articulation or language difficulties.
Psychological Assessment
Individual assessments of learning ability are provided as needed. Written parental consent is required. The assessment is followed by a parent conference to review the results. Parents are provided with a copy of the assessment report.
Behaviour Counselling
Students whose academic progress is impeded by persistent or serious behaviour difficulties may be referred for involvement with a psychometrist. If a student is to receive individual counselling, written parental consent is required.
Attendance Counselling
The Education Act requires regular attendance for all registered students, including JK and SK students. Students with serious attendance difficulties are referred to the Attendance Officer.
